The University of California, Riverside is a fully-accredited research university committed to the creation and transmission of knowledge at the highest levels. UCR's comprehensive programs and services, excellent faculty and staff, and vibrant and attractive physical environment provide a high-quality learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students. The 1,200-acre Riverside campus of the University of California is conveniently located 50 miles east of Los Angeles within easy driving distance to most of the major cultural and recreational offerings in Southern California. In addition, it is virtually equidistant from the desert, the mountains, and the ocean.
The roots of the campus date back to 1907 when the California State Legislature established the Citrus Experiment Station to conduct research on the agricultural problems of Southern California. Graduate work was conducted early in the station's history, and today, graduate education is central to its mission. The Riverside campus was declared a general campus in 1959, with a mandate to develop appropriate areas of study. In 1960, the Graduate Division was established, and graduate and professional programs were added.
UCR is a dynamic and innovative learning environment with enrollment currently at 14,500 students, of which 11% are graduate students. UCR has three colleges that offer bachelor's degrees: Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; Natural and Agricultural Sciences; and Engineering. A minimum of 180 units of academic work with a grade point average of 2.00 in all courses undertaken in the University of California is required for graduation. The campus continues to expand, with a number of buildings being constructed or remodeled. These include academic settings such as laboratories, libraries, and performing arts studios, as well as housing and recreational facilities. Prominent features of the campus include the 161-foot carillon tower, the Botanic Gardens, and acres of citrus groves. Adjoining the campus is University Village, a retail and office complex with 10 theaters, some used during the day as UCR classrooms, UCR professional offices, restaurants, and retail shops.
The University of California Riverside has an outstanding athletics program for men and women, including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field. The museum offers temporary exhibitions that explore the relationship of photography and digital media to politics, art, and society. It also hosts performance art and new music events.
